What are Blockchain Bridges? A Complete Guide

What are Blockchain Bridges? A Complete Guide
back

The world of Web3 technology has been advancing at a very rapid pace in recent years. Many new and promising blockchains have launched in recent months, as a few others fell in popularity. Nearly all new blockchains incorporate tokenization and smart contracts, which result in an ecosystem of applications such as DEXs.

The first cross-chain bridges were developed to maximize the current multi-chain landscape's potential. Cross-chain or blockchain bridges facilitate the transfer of information and value across different blockchains.

The top four benefits of blockchain bridges include communication between blockchains, flexibility, efficiency, and scalability.

Benefits of Blockchain Bridges

Blockchain bridges offer numerous benefits that have the potential to transform the blockchain ecosystem, making it more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly. Blockchain bridges enabled the transfer of digital assets and information between different blockchains, facilitating cross-chain transactions, and opening up new opportunities for decentralized applications, here are 4 of blockchain bridges Benefits

Communication

Cross-chain bridges connect two or more blockchain ecosystems, including main chains and side chains. An example is Ethereum as an L1 main chain, with Arbitrum as its official L2 side chain.

Porting a token via a cross-chain allows greater exposure for a DApp or DeFi protocol.

Flexibility

Every blockchain is different and has its advantages and disadvantages. A DApp or protocol can take advantage of each chain’s specific benefits by porting a token cross-chain. Having a token only on a particular chain limits the token to that chain’s specific capability.

Fees

The ability to port tokens from a congested or high-fee blockchain to a high-performance blockchain can be revolutionary. Low-fee and high-performance blockchains are especially beneficial to Web3 gaming projects and microtransactions.

Scalability

Porting tokens cross-chain can help solve scalability issues related to high demand. In 2017, the first blockchain game of sorts, CryptoKitties, was released to the public. Due to extremely high demand and Ethereum’s network limitations at the time, the network ended up congested. Fees soared, and all transactions on Ethereum took between hours and days.

Web3 games and other projects can now port their token across multiple chains and reduce network stress.

Please see our previous post for more on the benefits of porting tokens.

Why do we need a blockchain bridge?

A blockchain bridge connects two separate blockchain networks, allowing them to communicate and exchange data and assets. Bridges can be helpful for several reasons, such as allowing users to access a broader range of services and assets or enabling different blockchains to interoperate and take advantage of each other's features and capabilities.

For example, a blockchain bridge could be used to connect a private enterprise blockchain with a public blockchain like Ethereum, enabling the enterprise to take advantage of the security and transparency of the public blockchain while still maintaining control over its own network.

Types of Blockchain Bridges

Cross-chain bridges can fall primarily into two categories: custodial bridges and trustless bridges. Both types of bridges have advantages and risks associated with using them.

Custodial Blockchain Bridges

Custodial bridges have a central authority safeguarding funds deposited in the bridge. Custodial bridges can be permissionless and may not require manual authorization for porting tokens. The centralized authority is in charge of funds deposited on the bridge and ensures that tokens are minted at a 1-to-1 ratio on the requested chain.

Custodial bridges have higher security qualifications and are less likely to be hacked or exploited. As with every custodial solution in cryptocurrency, the bridge must be highly reputable and trusted. The most significant risk with custodial bridges is the custodial risk.

Users can partly avoid custodial risk by verifying the custodial bridge’s reserves via proof-of-reserves. Using proof-of-reserves ensures that funds are stored securely, and new tokens are minted at a 1-to-1 ratio.

Trustless Blockchain Bridges

Trustless bridges operate without an intermediary or trusted third party. These bridges operate only via a collection of smart contracts allowing users to bridge tokens across blockchains. With trustless bridges, the user's funds are always in the user’s control.

Trustless bridges are much more complicated on a technical level than some custodial bridges. This type of bridge can include many ins and outs across the blockchains they operate. As such, trustless bridges have faced many different attacks and exploits in recent years. This risk is sometimes referred to as smart contract risk.

Wormhole bridge, for example, experienced a major hack that resulted in the loss of $321M in February 2022. Following the hack, Wormhole rebranded to Portal.

How do Blockchain Bridges Work?

Currently, blockchain bridges tend to operate in three different ways. All of the different bridging methods are straightforward and easy to understand. Innovators may develop new & even more secure bridging techniques in the future.

Lock & Mint Bridges

Lock and mint bridges lock the tokens on chain A after receiving them and mint new tokens at a 1-to-1 ratio on chain B. The user that bridged tokens can receive his original tokens on chain A at any time. When a user redeems their tokens back on chain A, the tokens on chain B are sent to a burn address.

Burn & Mint Bridges

Burn & Mint bridges bear many resemblances to lock and mint bridges but are non-reversible. Upon bridging tokens, the original tokens on chain A are sent to a burn address, and new tokens are issued on chain B. Should a user want to bridge the tokens back to chain A, the tokens once again go through a burn and mint process.

Atomic Swaps

An atomic swap is a technique where two different cryptocurrencies can be exchanged directly from one party to another. Atomic swaps allow for trustless trading between coins on separate blockchains with only two transactions.

Wrapped Asset Bridges

Wrapped asset bridges facilitate the transfer of non-native assets between blockchains. These bridges lock and mint “wrapped” assets on a target chain. A great example would be Wrapped BTC, which mints WBTC on Ethereum for trading and DeFi purposes.

Are Blockchain Bridges Safe?

Different blockchain bridges have different goals and methods to secure these goals. These different goals and strategies can influence security to a certain extent. Before transferring tokens, it is recommended to look into a bridge and its security practices.

Risks of Using Blockchain Bridges

One of the most significant risks is security vulnerabilities. Bridges connect two different types of blockchains or more. As such, it could introduce vulnerabilities that would not be present on either network. Connecting blockchains could potentially allow malicious actors to exploit the bridge and access assets or information stored on either chain.

Hackers have focused on blockchain bridges as they store a large amount of value in the form of tokens. As per CoinTelegraph, over $2.5 billion has been stolen from blockchain bridges in the past two years.

One of the primary reasons for these hacks, as stated by CoinTelegraph, is open-source code and copy-pasting code. With open-source code, blackhat hackers can review a bridge's code for vulnerabilities. If a bridge’s developer copy pastes code from another bridge, they may copy the same vulnerabilities.

ChainPort’s main benefit as a bridge is its security-centric approach. The code used in ChainPort’s smart contracts is all original and not publicly viewable. Not revealing the code behind the bridge minimizes potential attack vectors.

Conclusion

Blockchain bridges facilitate the transfer of data and value across different blockchains. Porting tokens to another blockchain can help solve scalability issues and reduce fees.

The two primary types of blockchain bridges are custodial and trustless. Custodial bridges have a central authority safeguarding funds, while trustless bridges operate via a collection of smart contracts.

Blockchain bridges open various opportunities for DeFi protocols, DApps, and Web3 gaming projects. However, it is essential to consider the risks associated with each bridge and take appropriate steps to ensure your funds are secure.

FAQ

What is a Blockchain Bridge?

A blockchain bridge is a platform that allows different blockchain networks to communicate and exchange information. These bridges facilitate cross-chain transactions and enable users to access decentralized applications on different blockchains.

How do Blockchain Bridges Work?

Blockchain bridges work by creating a connection between different blockchain networks. This connection can be achieved through various methods, such as smart contracts, cryptographic algorithms, or specialized protocols. Once the bridge is established, users can transfer assets between blockchains.

Blockchain bridges are important because they allow for interoperability between different blockchain networks. This means that users can access a wider range of decentralized applications and services and are not limited to a single blockchain ecosystem.

Are There any Risks Associated with Using Blockchain Bridges?

Like any technology, blockchain bridges come with some inherent risks. For example, if the bridge is not adequately secured or audited, it could be vulnerable to hacks or exploits. Some blockchain bridges may require users to trust a centralized authority or intermediary. However, with proper precautions and careful vetting of the bridge technology, many of these risks can be mitigated.

How do I Know if a Blockchain Bridge is Secure?

It's essential to thoroughly research and vet any blockchain bridge before transferring assets or interacting with other blockchain networks. Look for bridges that have undergone third-party audits, have a proven security and reliability track record, and are transparent about their governance and security practices. Additionally, it's always a good idea to keep sensitive information secure and cautious when transferring assets across different blockchain networks.

When is the Best Time to use Crypto Bridge?

There is no particular “best time” to use a blockchain bridge. Users wanting to save funds on gas fees may want to wait for specific times when blockchain congestion tends to be lower. These times can include weekends, holidays, and the very early morning hours in the EST time zone.

How to Withdraw from a Crypto Bridge?

Withdrawing from a crypto bridge can vary depending on the specific platform you are using. ChainPort is a lock-and-mint bridge, meaning that if the newly minted tokens are bridged back to their original blockchain, the user will withdraw their original tokens.
